A set of six regency mahogany dining chairs . C1820. Seat rails stamped H H . Attributable to Gillows
The stamp H H has been found on numerous Gillows chairs and is discussed in S.Stuart Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, vol II , p244
The design of the legs, the cushion-moulded seat rails and the superb mahogany and construction of these chairs are classic Gillows characteristics of the 1820's while the hollow-cornered double-panelling of the top rail derives from an 1810 design shown by Stuart, vol I p136, fig.4.
An identical set of chairs were sold by Christie's 10th Dec 2013 lot 323.
