About this item
Large Pine Farmhouse Dining Table, circa 1970
A particularly substantial pine farmhouse dining table, dating to approximately the 1970s, with excellent scale and a pleasingly simple country-house character.
The generously proportioned rectangular top is constructed from broad pine boards, displaying attractive natural figuring, knots and variations in tone. The softly rounded edges give the table a comfortable, well-used appearance and complement the warm colour of the timber.
The top is supported on a deep, traditionally constructed apron, subtly detailed along its lower edge, and raised on four substantial turned pine legs. The restrained turning is derived from earlier Victorian and Edwardian farmhouse tables and gives the piece considerably more character than many later pine dining tables.
At 213 cm long, the table has an impressive presence while retaining an uncomplicated, practical quality. The 61 cm knee clearance is particularly useful and makes it very suitable as an everyday kitchen or dining table. Depending upon the chairs employed, it would comfortably accommodate eight diners, with the possibility of ten for more informal occasions.
The pine has developed an appealing mellow honey colour, with the expected knots, grain variation and signs of use that give a large country table its character. Its straightforward construction and generous proportions make it equally appropriate for a traditional farmhouse kitchen or as a warm, natural counterpoint within a more contemporary interior.
Condition: In good, solid and sturdy condition. The table has been cleaned and refinished, retaining an attractive warm patina and the natural character of the pine. There are minor marks, scratches, knocks and areas of wear to the top, edges, apron and legs, commensurate with age and previous use. Natural knots, grain variations and imperfections are present throughout the timber and form part of its character.
