About this item
A WONDERFUL 19TH CENTURY PENCIL AND CHALK ON PAPER RENDERING OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT AFTER THE ORIGINAL PAINTING BY SIR EDWIN LANDSEER. INDISTINCTLY SIGNED BUT DATED SUTTON 1881.
SIR EDWIN LANDSEER'S PAINTING DEPICTS THE MEETING BETWEEN ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND THE GREEK PHILOSPHER DIOGENES OF SINOPE. THE MEETING IS ONE OF THE MOST DISCUSSED ANECDOTES FROM PHILISOPHICAL HISTORY AND IS SUPPOSED EVIDENCE OF DIOGENES' DISREGARD FOR HONOUR, WEALTH AND RESPECT. WHEN ALEXNDER ASKED WHAT WISH HE COULD FULFILL FOR DIOGENES, DIOGENES REPLIED 'STAND OUT OF MY LIGHT'.
