About this item
Albert Rutherston, painter, stage and costume designer, book illustrator and poster designer, was born in Bradford, the younger brother of Sir William Rothenstein. At the time of ths sketch Rutherston was Master of Drawing at the Ruskin Museum and Walter Douglas, a star pupil who had won the Ruskin prize for drawing the year before. Although the weather appears unfriendly the place and the wine appear liberating. A sociable and extrovert man, Albert enjoyed the company of other artists and was part of a trio known as the ‘Three Musketeers’: Albert, and the artists, Augustus John and William Orpen, and the three men worked, socialised, and holidayed together. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, V&A, British Museum, Arts Council Collection, The Ashmolean, and St. Hilda’s College, Oxford, UCL Art Collection, Bradford Art Galleries, Manchester City Art Gallery and Brighton & Hove Art Gallery.
