About this item
An Innovative Folding Triptych Dressing Table
& Travelling Mirror by “Miroir Brot”
Gilt-Bronze, Glass & Jacquard Fabric
French, Paris
Circa 1910
Measures: 30.5 cm x 75 cm (Open)
30.5 cm x 24 cm (Closed)
A beautiful and exceptionally well designed mirror which can be used as a folding dressing-table looking-glass or, alternatively, suspended as a wall mirror by the two integral loops attached to the frame (or from a sting attached to these). It can also be used for travelling: the three panels of the mirror cleverly fold over one another so that the mirror completely closes for transportation. A catch keeps the panels safely closed when shut. The catch is marked "MIROIR BROT DÉPOSÉ" confirming the manufacturer of this patented design as being "Miroir Brot".
This firm was founded in Paris in 1826 by François Brot with the express purpose of making innovative mirrors of the highest quality. Miroir Brot swiftly became recognised for their exceptional products and soon became the mirror makers to King Charles X. They invented the triptych mirror in1875 and patented the "Mirophare" (a magnifying makeup/shaving mirror) in 1927.
Age related wear to the gilt-bronze, some spotting/oxidation to the edges of the mirror plates as expected. Old tape mark to the leatherette back. The jacquard fabric probably a sensitive replacement but very in keeping with the original appearance of these mirrors.
