About this item
Spanish 17th Century Oak Sculpture of 'Lonely Souls' burning in purgatory (possibly older). Possibly Polycrome paint. They reach out with their hands in order to attract our attention to pray for them. This sculpture probably stood in a monastery or church as it has two brackets to back and was probably on a stand. Unusual and Unique piece.
Purgatory scenes were particularly beloved in southern Europe between 16th and 18th century. There is a similar scene at the 'Capela Xeral de Animas' in Compostella outside the main entrance.
Provenance: From a Country House, England from family Flanders, Belgium
