About this item
Fine silk work embroidery of a young lady in a pastoral landscape, the figure depicted observing her fallen apple peel. According to a custom of the period, the letter formed by the fallen peel (or when thrown over the shoulder) would indicate the initial of the man she was destined to marry. The landscape needlework is finely embroidered with the sky, as well as the face and hands of the girl, painted in watercolour, all set within an oval mahogany frame with original silk mount.
English, circa 1780
