About this item

Executed on brown chine collé and signed in pencil, the print depicts a Maya-inspired figure in profile, holding a ceremonial object amid a dense, blocky background. The subject wears a stylised headwrap and patterned tunic, with exaggerated line work and textural contrast creating a strong visual rhythm. The monochrome palette in black over warm brown backing enhances the boldness of form.

Heller’s work was part of a wider movement in 1940s–60s Mexico that saw artists drawing on indigenous history to forge a national visual identity. This piece fuses pre-Columbian motifs with modernist abstraction, bridging cultural past and present in one composition.

The print is presented under glass in its original or period-appropriate frame with deep blue mount and narrow wooden surround.

Condition

The print is clean and well preserved with some natural toning to the paper and minor wear to the frame.
