About this item
Introduction to South Asian Sculptures of Garuda
Garuda, the half-man, half-eagle figure of Hindu and Buddhist tradition, has been depicted in South Asian sculpture for centuries. As the mount of Vishnu, he is shown in both dynamic and seated poses, often with outstretched wings and an eagle-like beak. His image appears in temple carvings, metalwork, and stone reliefs across the region, reflecting his role as a guardian and symbol of divine power.
Description of the Sculpture
This hand-carved wooden sculpture of Garuda was made in the mid-20th century, a traditional Balinese piece often used in temples or ceremonial settings. Painted in red, black, green, and gold, with gilded detailing, it has a striking presence.
Garuda is shown in a dynamic pose with wide eyes, an open beak revealing sharp teeth, and outstretched wings. The carving is highly detailed, with intricate featherwork and fine incised patterns on his clothing and ornate gold-painted jewellery. His headdress and limbs add to the imposing stance, while the sculpture sits on a black-painted base with swirling gold decoration. The wings and crest are constructed as separate, detachable pieces.
Condition
Some wear is visible, particularly around the face, raised edges. The fingers have been lost over the years, one remains but is loose. There is also a glue repair to one wing on close inspection. Structurally sound, with the detachable wings fitting securely.
Why You Should Buy
This is an epic sculpture, taking command of the room. We love it!
