About this item
A rare early Norah Wellings South Sea Islander doll, from the Norah Wellings Novelty Range, produced between 1927 and the early 1930s.
This doll is called ZuZu and is model number 121. He was made at the Victoria Toy Works and, at 16" tall is a mid size doll. He is made of soft velveteen with moulded face, painted mouth and very expressive glass eyes - these only appear in earlier dolls and were painted on later examples. His hair is made of mohair and he is jointed at the neck. He is wearing his original raffia skirt, head band and garters, along with original ivory coloured celluloid bangles round his ankles and the tops of his arms. Round his neck is a necklace made of mother of pearl chips.
He has an embroidered Norah Wellings label on the sole of his foot.
