About this item

Introduction to Persian Metalwork of the Period

Persia maintained a long and inventive metalworking tradition, and padlocks in zoomorphic forms were produced for many centuries in both urban workshops and rural craft centres. Lion-shaped locks are mentioned in studies of Islamic metalwork as characteristic of Iran, where the animal held protective associations and appeared widely in decorative arts. By the 19th century this craft survived as a continuation of older techniques, with brass casting and barbed-spring mechanisms still made by hand.

Description of the Padlock

This padlock is cast in brass as a compact standing lion with an elongated body and a separate curved tail that functions as the shackle. The proportions and features are consistent with Persian lock-making practice, including the tubular form, high shoulders and a stylised head with drilled eyes and mouth. The neck carries a plaited collar above vertical striations indicating the mane, and the feet are individually cast and hand-finished.

The sliding bolt passes cleanly through the chest and aligns with the internal double-leaf barbed spring, which grips the tail when locked. The key is cast in the traditional flattened form, made to lift the spring through the front aperture and release the shackle. Surface texture, casting seams and internal wear all reflect nineteenth-century workshop.

Condition

The lock shows typical wear for nineteenth-century brass with softened edges and oxidation in recesses. The body, tail shackle, internal spring and key remain together as a functional set.

Why You Should Buy

It offers a genuine piece of Persian craft history in a form that collectors prize for its character, rarity and survival as a complete working lock.
