About this item
Introduction to Japanese Netsuke
The art of netsuke carving reached its height during the Edo period when these miniature toggles were essential accessories for carrying personal items on the pocketless kimono. While originally purely functional, they became a canvas for master carvers to showcase intricate detail using materials like boxwood and bone to depict scenes from nature and folklore. In the post-war era, a significant revival of this craft emerged in Japan to meet global demand for high-quality miniatures that maintained traditional carving techniques.
Description of the Netsuke
This collection brings together three distinct carvings that capture the diverse spirit of Japanese mythology. The set includes a tightly coiled dragon and a highly unusual twin-headed mermaid, both carved from dark-stained boxwood. These are contrasted by a cheerful Okame mask carved from tagua nut, providing a pale and smooth surface that mimics the quality of ivory.
The craftsmanship is particularly visible in the rhythmic scale work on the dragon and the mermaid figures. Small inlaid dark beads have been used for the eyes of the dragon and mermaid to create an alert focus. The Okame mask features a high-relief design with characteristic dimpled cheeks and narrow eyes, while the reverse side reveals the natural dark rind of the tagua nut.
On the undersides are functional himotoshi cord holes and tribute signatures for the master Masatoshi (正利), inscribed to honour the technical legacy of the traditional Nagoya school. The combination of materials gives this group a varied tactile quality that is central to the appreciation of Japanese miniatures.

Why You Should Buy
The group feels like a complete snapshot of a Japanese legend, moving from the dark, coiled mystery of the sea creatures to that big, beaming grin on the mask.
