About this item

Introduction to Japanese Netsuke

Netsuke were functional toggles used during the Edo and Meiji periods to secure personal items to the sash of a kimono. These miniature sculptures evolved from simple fasteners into a sophisticated art form reflecting the status and taste of the wearer. Master carvers often drew inspiration from the natural world, creating tactile objects designed to be turned over and felt in the palm of the hand.

Description of the Japanese Netsuke

This netsuke depicts a hunting dog or pointer rendered in a classic standing pose with an alert and curious expression. The carver has carefully observed the animal’s anatomy, following the lean lines of the ribs and the powerful musculature of the hindquarters. A slender tail curves naturally against the body, ensuring the piece remains compact and could be functional as a toggle.

The surface of the boxwood has been polished to a high sheen, developing a warm amber patina that highlights the fine grain of the timber. The eyes are inlaid with dark, polished horn to catch the light, while the underside features an incised signature within a rectangular reserve. Included with the netsuke is a carved dark wood display stand featuring traditional scrolled feet and a fitted recessed top.

Condition

The carving remains in good condition with a smooth surface and well-preserved horn inlays.
