About this item
Introduction to Japanese Netsuke
The art of netsuke carving reached its height during the Edo period when these miniature toggles were essential accessories for carrying personal items on the pocketless kimono. While originally purely functional, they became a canvas for master carvers to showcase intricate detail using materials like boxwood and ivory to depict scenes from folklore and nature. In the post war era a significant revival of this craft emerged in Japan to meet global demand for high quality miniatures that maintained traditional carving techniques.
Description of the Netsuke
This collection features four distinct renderings of the rat, the first animal of the Japanese zodiac and a popular symbol of good fortune. The group includes a large seated rat with an alert expression, a standing rat carrying a heavy wealth sack, a clever rat interacting with a turtle, and a classic rounded figure in a crouched pose. A small tiered wooden stand is included to display the four miniatures together.
The carvers have used the dense grain of boxwood to achieve a high level of detail, especially in the rhythmic hairwork and the realistic textures of the woven sack. Each animal is detailed with small inlaid dark eyes that catch the light to create a curious and lively character. The wood is finished with a warm honey-coloured stain that has settled into the deeper engravings to provide a sense of natural depth and age.
These pieces carry tribute signatures for celebrated carvers such as Masatoshi and Tomokazu. Every carving is designed to be tactile and smooth, making them as pleasant to hold as they are to view.
Condition
The carvings are in good order with no damage to the wood or the fine inlaid details.
Why You Should Buy
