About this item
This pair of candlesticks are modelled as seated Lincoln Imps. They are cast in solid brass and sit above a wide, flared base.
The Lincoln Imp is a carved medieval figure found high in the Angel Choir of Lincoln Cathedral, linked to a local legend of a mischievous demon turned to stone by an angel.
In the late 19th century, the Industrial Revolution and expansion of Britain’s railways brought visitors to cathedral cities in unprecedented numbers. Metalworkers responded to this growing tourist market by producing souvenirs inspired by regional emblems.
Pairs of Lincoln Imp candlesticks from this period are scarce, as many were made as singles for the souvenir trade.
