About this item
Introduction to Theravada Buddhism
Theravada Buddhism in Thailand is sustained by daily exchange between monastics and lay communities, where giving food and necessities to monks is understood as an act of merit making. The alms bowl is central to that relationship, functioning as the vessel through which offerings are received during the morning round and within temple settings. The Thai monastic community, or sangha, has also long held a visible civic role alongside its religious one, shaping how Buddhist imagery circulates in both devotional and domestic spaces.
Description of the Sculpture
This is a tall carved wooden figure of a monk, standing upright on an integral square plinth base, with both arms extended to support a shallow circular bowl. The proportions are deliberately simplified, with an elongated body and a stylised head and face, giving it a modernist folk character rather than a naturalistic one.
The surface is finished in a gilt coating over a crackled ground, creating a textured, mosaic like pattern across the robe and head, with areas of darker undertone visible where the gilding has thinned. The bowl is finished to match, forming a single sculptural silhouette intended to read clearly at distance.
Figures of monks holding bowls relate directly to the everyday economy of Thai Buddhism, where monks receive offerings from householders as part of merit making, and the bowl itself is a defining monastic object. In a domestic interior, this kind of figure often functions as a small altar presence or as a symbolic reminder of giving and restraint, even when used simply as a decorative object.
Condition
Some wear to the gilt finish. Overall it presents well and remains a strong display piece.
