    About this item

A very interesting little whisky measure dating to between 1903 and 1911. It is made of thick glass with a polished base and is etched with the cypher for King Edward VII. Below the cypher is the word 'Osborne' and above is the engraved letter 'W'. The flask holds about one third of a gill and has an engraved measurement line to this level.

It is likely that the measure was made for use at the Royal Naval College sited on the estate of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, her son Edward VII passed the majority of the Osborne estate to the government who, in 1903 converted it into a naval training college. The college remained at the site until 1921. It seems feasible that the engraving on the flask relates to this, but I don't know what the W stands for.

An interesting piece in good condition.
