Very Fine Nigerian Yoruba Gelede Mask

Very Fine Nigerian Yoruba Gelede Mask

    Item details

An interesting carved wooden tribal mask, made by the Yoruba people of Nigeria in the early to mid 20th century. These ceremonial masks are used in the Gelede festivals that pay homage to the power of female ancestors and older women in the community. This female mask is made of soft wood and has been beautifully carved with an elaborate coiffure and facial scarification. It has typical large protuberant eyes, emphasized with white pigment, and generous lips.

This mask has an appealing aged patina with clear signs of some age.
