Antique Victorian Mahogany Fireplace Surround Of Architectural Form | Nostalgia

An impressive and generously proportioned antique Victorian fireplace surround, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880, beautifully constructed in richly coloured mahogany.

Of substantial architectural proportions, this handsome surround features a broad, projecting mantel shelf enriched with a continuous band of deeply carved, rounded fluting. The shelf is supported by pairs of elegantly shaped and reeded brackets, arranged either side of two applied, rectangular panels with finely moulded detailing. A central fluted panel provides further architectural interest and symmetry.

Below, the substantial jambs are decorated with paired vertical fluting and shaped pillars, resting on bold, stepped plinth blocks. The generous use of solid mahogany, together with the quality of the carving and joinery, gives this fireplace a particularly imposing appearance.

Please note: The inner timber moulding surrounding the fireplace aperture is a later addition. This can be removed if required, increasing the available opening from 995mm wide x 950mm high to approximately 1135mm wide x 1030mm high, offering greater flexibility when accommodating a fireplace insert or grate.

The fireplace remains in good antique condition, displaying light but entirely expected signs of age and use, including minor surface marks and gentle wear to the finish.

A particularly substantial and decorative example of Victorian architectural joinery, ideally suited to a grand period reception room or as a striking feature within a contemporary interior.
