FS0480 A LARGE ORNATE RECLAIMED PINE AND GESSO FIRE SURROUND C.1920

A large, ornate, reclaimed pine and gesso fire surround dating to C.1920. The fire surround has a very handsome period appearance with ionic style columns on each side, in relief, with gesso detailing. The crossbar has gesso acanthus leaves and an urn, in the Adam style, within panels. There is a pretty gesso leaf border around the front and side edges of the mantel and there are two carved corbels under the mantel. The pine has a good colour.

The surround is in good solid condition with some signs of age and wear, as expected. There is a small piece of the gesso border around the mantel missing, on one of the side edges. The mantel has some small holes and there is some white residue on the back edge. The fire surround has some knocks, scratches and a wood knot. The gesso has some cracks. There is some white residue on the side edges of the legs and some marks and nails. The surround has had some small patches of filler applied in places. The fixing tabs have some residue paint and tarnish and one has a nail and some wood still attached. Please see pictures for condition details. The fire surround is of a good size and has a fine period appearance and it would make a fantastic feature for a fireplace.
