Reclaimed Victorian Fireplace Surround In Rouge Royal Marble

A 19th-century Victorian fireplace surround, in richly figured Rouge marble with contrasting Belgian black marble detailing.

Dating from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1890, it has a strong architectural design typical of the period. The broad frieze and substantial jambs display natural variation in muted red, terracotta, cream and grey tones, with extensive white veining throughout.

The jambs are headed by vertically fluted panels and interrupted by geometric black marble tablets, framed by projecting black mouldings. Further black marble borders define the inner edges, creating a crisp contrast with the warmer Rouge marble.

A substantial projecting shelf, in Rouge marble and supported by understated black marble mouldings, completes the design. The substantial plinth blocks and simple architectural form make this a versatile chimneypiece, equally suited to a traditional or contemporary interior.

The fireplace has been professionally restored and polished, enhancing the marble’s colour and natural figuring while retaining the character of an original Victorian chimneypiece.
