About this item
A large wooden figure of a bear, hand carved in Japan in the mid to late 20th century. These figures were traditionally made in the Hokkaido region by the Ainu people, and this example is typical of their work. This bear is shown standing on all fours with his head turned and in mid growl. He has been skilfully hand carved out of a heavy, dense wood, and has lots of detail to his fur and face. He is a good large example with lovely aged patina to the wood. He has an appealing face and, in spite of the fact that he is growling he looks quite friendly.
This piece is in good condition with minor surface wear.
