About this item
Vintage Native American Plains Sioux beadwork pouch. The glass beads which were coloured, drawn, cut and tumbled en masse, are Venetian and came from Italy, where they were sold to traders who then sold them around the world, including Asia, the Americas and later to Africa. The Indians bought them to decorate their clothes and belongings and chose traditional colours to look like the style of their own tribe. Sioux patterns were mostly geometric and on white or pearl white backgrounds. Also used were red, white, blue, grey and bright yellow and dull green. They decorated many items including pouches and bags and sold them to the whites. This pouch retains its bright colours and has a timeless beauty.
North American, circa 1890 - 1910
