Antique French gilt cushioned mirror with foxed mercury glass
Antique French, gilt-framed, cushioned mirror, circa 1840, with outset corners containing central raised acanthus leaf rosettes. The outer frame is partly decorated with a ribbontwist design and delicate beading along the inner edge. The inner frame is decorated with alternating beads and husks and the two frames are linked at each corner with an elongated acanthus leaf. Where the mirror has been cleaned for more than 180 years, the gilding has thinned in places revealing the dark terracotta bole and cream gesso beneath. The original, bevelled, mercury glass has evenly spread foxing, which is darker in the side sections, and the central glass sparkles beautifully. This attractive mirror can be hung portrait (as photographed) or landscape.
