About this item
Superb armorial interior games box made for STEWART, BARON BLANTYRE. Blantyre was obviously very keen on games as, uniquely perhaps, he had sets of armorial gaming counters made for himself and his two sons. But as far as I know only one mother-of-pearl armorial box set. Readily datable thanks to the design of the early billing-birds showing on all four sides of the base, with the altar of love, Cupid's bow and arrows, breadfruit garland etc etc.. - i.e. the 'Valentines pattern' used for a few years around 1740 - 1750 on porcelain and counters. Full arms for Stewart with supporters, coronet and motto SOLA JUVAT VIRTUS - Virtue alone prevails.
