    About this item

Grande 9ft Regency mirror (as seen on Tv ) circa 1795 Rutland arms Collection bakewell

As seen on salvage hunters the restorers!

    9ft English Regency mirror from

‘ the Rutland arms in Bakewell collection circa 1795

This beautiful & one of a kind English regency Mercury glass mirror came from the Rutland arms collection , sold off in 2019 when the building under went a refurbishment.

It was then in need of restoration and was sent to the talented Ruff Tappin & appeared on the hit tv show ‘salvage hunters the restorers’ .

This then underwent full restoration to reveal its true beauty. To now be one of the most grand mirrors currently on the market .

    The Rutland Arms in Bakewell:

once acclaimed as ‘Derbyshire’s most famous inn’, was built in 1804 to meet the needs of the aristocracy, gentry, and other wealthy folk on their visits to enjoy the countryside delights of the High Peak district.

A well-known character of Bakewell, who had close associations with The Rutland Arms in its earliest years, was the multi-talented White Watson (1760-1835).

He was a grandson of the sculptor Samuel Watson, whose much admired stone carvings adorn Chatsworth House, the palatial home of the Dukes of Devonshire, just three miles to the north-east of Bakewell.

Watson is known to have worked at Burghley House and at Sudbury Hall. Also working at Badminton, Burghley and Sudbury was Grinling Gibbons, who had a great influence on Watson's work.

    (Possible connection to the mirror?)

Some of Known historic people who stayed at the Rutland arms :

    the king of saxony

    charles dickens

    Billy greaves

    Joseph Paxton

    jane austen

    And many more ..

The manner & style of the mirror :

The mirror we believe is in the manner of the famous Grinling Gibbons , from twin cherubs head with wings similar to the Limewood carving, by Grinling Gibbons, 1694 on the Trinity College Library.

The violin & scroll work also .

    Measurements are :

    255cm height

    177cm width

Currently we have fitted a temporary frame work to the back for lifting off the ground so the mirror can be displayed & for easier easier transport.

    Please see images .

You can also see from the back the carved Roman numerals on back of each carved section to when each limewood carving was made to refix back in place on the oak frame , this would of been done at the period when it was produced .

There is also a pencil signature that we can’t make out who it is .
