About this item
This is an ancient Roman intaglio, dating to the 1st - 2nd century A.D. It is cut with a standing male figure holding a staff entwined with a serpent. This figure represents Asclepius, the god of medicine, healing, rejuvenation and physicians. The gem would have originally been set into a gold or silver signet ring to seal and authenticate documents and letters. It is a wonderful gem in excellent condition, suitable for remounting into a gold signet ring today.
