    About this item

A pair of late 19th century (circa 1883) oak hall benches by James (or JAS) Shoolbred & Co. - ADDITIONAL IMAGES CAN BE VIEWED BELOW:

This pair of hall benches each consist of a pierced brass balustrade to the back rail with down swept arms and applied brass mounts leading down to a solid oak seat, all with reeded decoration.

The sides with turned roundels and applied central brass paterae, supported on four reeded sabre legs, joined with stretchers.

Both of the hall benches having design Registration marks to the rear, one dating to 13th December 1883.

James or JAS Shoolbred & Company, established in 1820’s and was originally a drapers and later a Department store on Tottenham Court Road, London.

In the late 1860’s to early 1870’s they began designing, manufacturing and selling high quality furniture, the sophisticated designs referencing Regency Aesthetics with Greek and Roman influences.

The company regularly produced sales catalogues with guides for the Victorian home owner to design their own rooms and were given a Royal Warrant in the mid 1880’s and eventually ceased trading in 1931.
