About this item
Introduction to Gothic Revival Lighting
Gothic revival lighting emerged as a romanticised celebration of medieval architectural forms during the nineteenth century. These designs often utilised heavy metals and intricate openwork to mimic the stone tracery found in cathedrals and ancient fortifications. This style of lighting was prized for its ability to cast dramatic shadows and add a sense of historical gravitas to a domestic interior.
Description of the Candle Lantern
This substantial candle lantern features a classic triptych body with three clear glass panels that provide an unobstructed view of the interior. The central panel serves as a hinged door, allowing easy access to the candle plate, and is secured by a metal latch. The top of the frame is dominated by two vented chimney domes and a sturdy arched handle which allow for safe hanging or transport.
The frame is decorated with detailed pierced galleries at both the upper and lower edges, featuring a repeated scrolled pattern that softens the heavy cast iron construction. The entire piece rests on four splayed decorative feet that provide stability. The surface has developed a rich and authentic rusted patina over time, which highlights the depth of the casting and gives the lantern a rugged, time-worn character.
Condition
The metalwork has aweathered patina with surface rust and remains structurally sound. The glass is clear and undamaged, though the interior base shows a buildup of natural candle wax.
Why You Should Buy
There is something uniquely atmospheric about the way a single candle flame flickers behind weathered glass and cast iron on a quiet winter evening.
