About this item
This is a nice Renaissance silver-gilt clothing hook fastener, dating to the 16th century. It is of small size, originally sewn onto delicate silks or child's clothing. These were used as buttons to hook together or to close up garments. It is decorated as a spoked wheel, Catherines Wheel. Used to invoke the patronage and protection of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The hook is missing but still retains the securing loop on the back. A nice item with much of the original gilding remaining
