For his graphic works Nicholson was inspired by the simple woodblock prints in Georgian 'chapbooks' which, though crude, could nevertheless convey complicated images through clever design. Nicholson's illustrations for An Almanac of Twelve Sports were accompanied by verses composed by Rudyard Kipling.
