    About this item

Regency period pink lustre ware jug
    Of John Shorthose type with
    neoclassical motifs in white sprigging
    Staffordshire, England
    Circa 1810-1820

    Dimensions
Height 12.5 cm; Length (spout to handle) 19.5 cm; Diameter  of base: 10.8 cm.

An exremely fashionable and highly decorative pink lustre pearlware jug with a relief moulded band of fruiting vine around the collar. The piece is typical of decoration associated with wares from the Shorthose pottery .

    Condition
The lustre is bright. and unworn. Some age related ware as expected. The inevitable hairlines associated with 200 years of use. A careful and sensistive restoration to the handle which, at some stage has been broken and restuck.

    Notes
These types of wares were once identified as "Wilson School" (after the pottery of W. Wilson of Hanley, one of the pioneers of a "Gold" lustre glaze with a rich copper or bronzed purple tone). They are now also associated with  John Shorthose. See Michael Gibson 19th Century Lustre Ware page 85 for similar
