About this item

Introduction to the Arts and Crafts Movement

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in Britain in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, favouring honest materials and traditional techniques. Its ideals often extended to domestic and utilitarian objects, emphasising quality workmanship and functional beauty. Copper was a favoured medium for metalworkers influenced by this aesthetic, particularly for items like jugs, trays, and kitchenware.

Description of the kettle

This wide-based copper ship’s kettle features a striking conical body that flares dramatically outward, giving it a low centre of gravity well suited to marine conditions. The handle is constructed in a sharply angled strap form, riveted directly into the body for strength, and balanced opposite a boldly projecting spout with flat, tapering sides. The lid is topped by a sturdy folded copper loop handle, echoing the industrial geometry of the overall form.

The surface retains its original reddish copper tones, with scattered verdigris forming along joints and rivets, particularly at the base and handle fittings. The interior still shows traces of its original tinning, and the body bears hammered construction marks typical of hand-fabricated metalwork from the period. Functional rivet points and seams are left plainly visible, celebrating the structural honesty typical of Arts and Crafts design.

Condition

The surface shows light denting, oxidation, and patina from age and use. It remains solid, attractive, and complete overall.

Why You Should Buy

A bold and functional survivor from the Arts and Crafts era with real sculptural presence and practical design roots.
