About this item
A pair of early 19th-century whale bone scrimshaw vegetable/salad tongs, probably American, the hinged spoon and fork decorated with finely carved foliate and geometric forms. 30.5 cm
Notes: Apparently, another example of these tongs, likely by the same maker, is illustrated on page 255 of Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders by E. Norman Flayderman.
Condition: In excellent, undamaged condition. There is a clear, glue-like substance in the bowl of the spoon. This does not appear to be part of a repair (the back of the spoon shows no damage. Very light wear/discolouration.
PLEASE NOTE: We can only ship this to a UK address, the cost of which is included.
