Brown Transferware Cream Soup Plate with Hand Colored Painting
TONQUIN PATTERN
Edge Malkin & Co
Staffordshire England 1883
This is a fantastic plate measuring a large 9 3/4 inches in diameter. The plate is decorated in the TONQUIN pattern, featuring an assymetrical composition that reflects the wonderful imagination of the Aesthetic Movement -- arching palms and lush vegetation, a Heron and many other tropical birds, with an inset circular cartouche of a tropical bird perched at sunrise. The intricate border on the lower half includes another Heron along with geometric whimsies. Highlighted by a master artist in a lovely palette of colors.
The piece was made by Edge Malkin & Co., a pottery in the Staffordshire district in England. The kite shaped registration mark dates the piece to 1883.
Never used. The plate is in great condition.
