About this item
Georgian gothic mahogany hall lantern, with castellated cornice over canted five glazed panels, each with pierced gothic arches cusping and quatrefoil tops, the lower frieze with quatrefoil fretwork and the base with cavetto moulding. To the interior, a polished and silvered tole back, the base having a cast brass lantern candlestick with a broad drip pan.
Various cabinet makers used designs influenced by the gothic revival style as was the fashion of the day, including the likes of George Smith, Chippendale and Hepplewhite. The designer of this example is as yet unidentified.
