    About this item

Georgian mahogany wine or hunt table in the Manner of Gillow’s of Lancaster & London. Of horseshoe design, with four turned and reeded, tapering legs with brass collars that are detachable. The top, with reeded edge, has hinged, extending flaps with loper supports. To the centre, a removable leaf allows for the table to be used as a side or console table against a wall, or with the leaf removed and the flaps extended, to be put in front of the fireplace for sitting around for social and comfortable drinking.
By Gillow of Lancaster, English circa 1795-1810.

Other models by Gillow’s, without the central leaf, have coasters on brass rails within the centre, which can be moved around so that drinkers can replenish their glasses. This type also came with a baize curtain suspended from a brass rail as protection from the heat of the fire. For similar example see Vol.11. Christopher Gilbert. Furniture of Temple Newsum & Lotherton Hall P.495/496.
