About this item
William Cave Day was a painter of genre and landscapes in oils and watercolours. Born in Dewsbury, he studied in Paris and Herkomer’s School in Bushey. He lived in Harrogate and painted many views of Knaresborough and other local subjects.
He enjoyed considerable success during his life, exhibiting frequently at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, where he was elected RBA in 1903. In the last few years of his life he lived in Cornwall. A Memorial Exhibition was held at the Municipal Art Gallery, Plymouth soon after his death and at the March Show Day in St. Ives in 1924.
"Looking towards the Artist's Studio, St. Ives" is a charming example of his work. Measuring 10"x 14" it is signed lower left and is framed in a quality gilt frame giving an overall size of 15"x 19".
