George Hooper was born in 1910 in Gorakpur, India before moving to London in 1912. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1930-31 and then the Royal Academy Schools in 1931-35. Hooper won two gold medals, a travelling scholarship and the Rome scholarship. During World War II he was invited to join Kenneth Clarke's 'Recording Britain' scheme and painted buildings and sites of national importance. It was during his travels to France and Italy where Hooper was exposed to movements such as Fauvism and he cites the works of Henri Matisse, as well as Raoul Dufy and Ivon Hitchens, as his main influences. Hooper was a great friend and admirer of Duncan Grant and he painted several times at Charleston. He exhibited numerous times at the Leicester Galleries during the 1940's alongside Walter Sickert, Duncan Grant and Ivon Hitchens.
