    About this item

A rare and unusual, very large, antique reclaimed wooden mortar. We believe the mortar may possibly originate from North Africa, is made of a hardwood and is approximately 250 years old. The mortar has a large removeable top with a hole in the centre, presumably for a grinding tool that was inserted through the hole into a well in the large base for grinding corn or spices (mortar has no tool now). The mortar has been handmade and has a very interesting rustic appearance, making it an ideal décor item. The underside of the mortar top has had a patch applied to the hole and therefore the top can be turned over and the mortar could be used as a fantastic and unusual table either for either internal or external use. The mortar base could also make an interesting planter.

The mortar is very old and rustic and has character signs of its considerable age, that add interest and charm. The base of the mortar has some damage where a piece of wood has broken away at the bottom and there are some further knocks to the base. The wood has knocks, chips, surface splits and a rustic weathered appearance. There are scratches and grooves where it has been used, perhaps for cutting items on its top. The edges of the top have some knocks and damage from use. The inside of the base has a large crack, where the hole for grinding is, but it is stable. Please see pictures for condition details. The mortar is of an enormous size and very heavy and is the ideal size for a garden or for a reception room. The mortar is a truly unusual and interesting piece that would make the perfect showpiece for a home.
