About this item
19th Century Overpainted Photograph of a Young Indian? Jockey
Gouache on paper
The photo is mounted and stretched on canvas, complete with a period oak frame and gold slip.
Circa 1890
50.5cm H, 46cm W (the frame).
Colour photography was not widely available till the second half of the 20th century so for over a century artists had been embellishing photographs with colour of many different mediums to bring them to life. The subject is young to be a jockey, from the delicate features of this jockey we suggest this is a staged photograph of a child in jockey's silks. Overpainted photographs were very popular in India, perhaps this could be a Maharajas's son?
