    About this item

A Very Large Stately Home Quality
Antique Victorian Double Damask Linen Table Cloth
    Probably Irish
    Dated 1898

    Measures: 14½ Feet x 9 Feet (440 cm x 282 cm)

Marks: A red petit-point embroidery inventory/laundry mark of an "A" beneath a peer's coronet (indicating an aristocratic provenance) and the date "6.98" (indicating it was acquired in June 1898).

An extraordinarily substantial table cloth which could be used to cover the high-table of an Oxbridge College, a table for a banquet or feast, or folded to a smaller size for more modest occasions. The pretty 'double damask' linen woven with floral patterns.

    Condition:
In good condition for age. The linen still bright white, starchy and shiny. Three carefully done historic "housemaid" repairs with linen patches stitched over holes/wear. These add character but could probably be improved upon by a more skilled hand.

It is rare to find cloths of such substantial dimensions from this period still in good condition.
