    About this item

Vintage Artist Paint Color Salesman Sample Advertising Plate

Gemini Oneida Buffalo Pottery Co USA 1960

This vintage ceramic paint sample plate measures 9 inches in diameter. It represents a spectrum of colors sold in kiln fired enamel paints that were made for pottery and porcelain decoration. The blank porcelain bone china plate was printed with a color selection of 27 pigments to demonstrate the use of colors and range when applied to porcelain bone china (with a firing range of 740 – 860 degrees centigrade). The center of the plate depicts a Buffalo or Bison, representing the company name – the plate was made for the demonstration and sales use of the Oneida division of the Buffalo Pottery Co. Fabricated by an anonymous ceramic pigment and glaze company. The plate is a work of art and a piece of art and industrial history perfect for the creative inspiration of interior design.

Test/Color Sample Plates were made to support the pottery industry including pottery manufacturers, schools and retailers, providing a guide for painters and potters to ensure consistency in colors, for practice work or to show colors to customers. They were used to market the range of coatings and enamel glazes available to potteries chinaworks and factories. They would have been displayed in the store or showroom and used as a color wheel like a catalog, carried by paint salesmen. These plates were not available to buy.

The plate is in great condition with no chips cracks fades or repairs. A couple of superficial utensil scratches, as shown. Offered as is.

The plate is a unique, one of a kind art piece perfect for the artist potter or anyone with an artistic flair. The colorful piece displays beautifully, and would light up any work space wall. We have listed other sample plates -- collect several of them to form a very unusual collectors item, or art studio/interior design/shop prop.
