About this item
These four small plates with a scalloped edge are decorated with a transfer printed blue and white pattern entitled "Fairy Villas". This pattern consists of a very fanciful or romantic scene with very ornate Chinese buildings, a boat on a lake and a figure with a wand or a staff. The rim is decorated with an intricate and very delicate pattern of flowers. Originally thought to be by John Maddock, recent research has shown the maker to be John Meir of Tunstall. They measure 172 mm (6.75 inches) in diameter. There are no chips or cracks but one plate has discoloured slightly. They would date from around 1835
