About this item
EARLY CHILDS TRANSFERWARE CHRISTENING MUG
ANN ~ A BROTHER’S GIFT
Staffordshire England ~ c. 1830
This is child's transferware mug, circa 1830. This diminutive piece stands 2 3/8 " tall x 2 5/8 " wide with an applied loop acanthus handle. The mug is light weight and beautifully potted with a pearlware glaze.
It is transfer printed in Brown with a cartouche surrounding “ A Brother’s Gift” The opposite site has the name “ ANN”.
The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire district. Mugs like this were made as gifts for good children, christenings, and rewards.
The condition of this exceptional mug is great. Clean and bright, and no wear, probably never used. Two almost invisible tight hairlines off the rim. Nicely potted and the transfers were applied with a good deal of attention to detail.
