About this item
This is a LOANER Pocket watch. When a Railroad employee needed to have his watch serviced and maintained, he was lent a pocket watch until his was ready. These watches were made by manufacturer and had many different markings and stamps depending on the railroad, watch service dept and watch manufacturer. This watch is marked Pyper Watch Co - The Pyper Watch Co. was the official watch inspection establishment in Indianapolis of the Big Four Railroad, the B&O Railroad, the C&O Railroad, and the N&W Railroad per an entry in the January 30th, 1924 issue of "The Jewelers' Circular."
Movement – this is a nickel ¾ plate movement with a lever escapement with a micrometer regulator. The movement is decorated with damascening and is signed “Hamilton Watch Co, Lancaster Pa, 17 Jewels, 972, Adj 5 positions, Made in the USA” # 1646759. The movement is in 95% mint condition
Case – the movement comes in a nickeloid Keystone open face case, which has screw off back and bezel. The back cover is engraved with a circle and is engraved Pyper-Watch Co, 127, Indianapolis, IND. The rest of the case has a smooth plain finish and is in 90% mint condition – the case is in excellent condition but the engraving is worn
Dial – the white enamel dial is double sunk and comes with a full set of blue steel hands. The dial is signed “Hamilton, Pyper-Loaner” and is in 95% mint condition – two tiny flakes around the central post in the dial
The watch measures 49mm wide x 12mm deep
The watch is stem wound / lever set
The watch has a mineral glass
