    About this item

Framed  17th century engraving portrait of Witte Cornelisz de With, Vice Admirael van Holland en Westfriesland" - Cornelis de Witt (1623-1672) General Admiral Holland West-Friesland Portrait by Bloteling, Abraham (1640-1690) und Hendrik Maertensz Sorgh (c.1611-1670) (after):  Published by Amsterdam ca. 1680., 1680

Lawyer and regent in Dordrecht. Son of Jacob de Witt (one of the leaders of the states-right party, who was imprisoned in Loevestein Castle), elder brother of Jan de Witt. Cornelis de Witt was a prominent politician during the Stadholderless Period (1650-1672). He represented the States General in the field. In 1667 he accompanied the fleet that attacked the English naval base at Chatham. In the summer of 1672 he came under suspicion of conspiring against Prince William III. Despite the lack of evidence and the absence of a confession under torture, Cornelis de Witt was condemned to exile for life. When his brother Johan visited him in prison, an angry mob gathered outside 'Gevangenpoort' in The Hague, dragged the two brothers outside and killed them..
