About this item
After an original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds and engraved by F. Bartolozzi RA. Philip Yorke, Viscount Royston (1784 - 1808), as a small child in a landscape, a bird upon his left arm and a loyal dog before him. Originally published by Molteno Colnaghi & Co, 132 Pall Mall in 1788. Copies held with the National Trust. In a gilt carved frame, circa 1900.

Viscount Royston was the eldest son of Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke, a British traveller and politician, holding the seat for Reigate in 1806. Joshua Reynolds was one of the major European portrait artists of the 18th century and knighted by George lll in 1769. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy and its first president. Francesco Bartolozzi arrived from Florence in Italy in 1764 and was appointed ‘engraver to the King’. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768.
