About this item
Early engraving on heavy quality rag paper from the plate by George Pencz originally engraved and sold in 1539 then re-published by Edizione di Carlo Losi in 1773. This shows the battle of Cartagena; Roman soldiers in foreground storming a large military fortification with rounded towers at left using ladders. This edition is clearly labelled to the base as 1773. Also NOT Carthage as suggested in some catalogues. The engraving is after a lost drawing by Giulio Romano for tapestries for King Francis I showing the Triumph of Scipio Africanus following the capture of Cartagena.. . . . sorry re convoluted description ie Published by "Edizione di Carlo Losi 1773' of a 1539 copy of c1510 ! Image size Height: 414 millimetres Width: 550 millimetres ** The first image is contrast enhanced in photoshop. All others natural light on a dismal wet day**
CONDITION ISSUES : old surface soiling with full borders and margins. As done from the original plate looks older than it is but is on substantially better paper
