About this item
After Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527-1606)
“Perspective of a Colonnade with a Ruined Vault and a Well”
Etching on paper
16.3 cm x 21.5 cm
An unusual print which appears to be a reverse, without text, of the engraving identified as 193-2(2) in "The New Hollstein Dutch & Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts 1450-1700" by M. van Heemskerck. The "original" is to be found as one of the illustrations in "Variae architecturae formae: a Joanne Vredemanni Vriesio, magno artis huius studiosorum commodo, inventae", published in Antwerp in 1601. This is possibly a pirated copy, therefore. However, no similar print has been located so it is difficult to reach a conclusion as to its purpose.
For the reverse "original" version See Rijksmuseum RP-P-1964-1605 - https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/collectie/RP-P-1964-1605
